Testaccio is one of the oldest and most characteristic areas of Rome and is located near the most important tourist sites. It takes its name from Monte Testaccio, an artificial hill created by Romans using broken pottery between the 2nd and 3rd century BC. The Latin name for the hill - “testae cocci” - refers to the broken urns which were used to hold goods exchanged with the city of Ostia Antica at an ancient port on the River Tiber.
Not far from the apartment and the nearby underground station is the Pyramid in which praetor and tribune Cauis Cestius was buried in the 12th century BC
Today Testaccio is a lively area famous for trattorias and restaurants in which you can sample the most authentic Roman dishes. Furthermore Monte Testaccio is home to a vibrant night life with a large number of fashionable clubs and pubs. Many of the bars and discos are dug into the artificial hill and in some it is still possible to see fragments of the pottery urns of which the hill is constructed. The apartment is located in Via Mastro Giorgio, a street road which joins two of the most important squares in Testaccio: Piazza Testaccio, in which a picturesque market is held every morning from Monday to Saturday and in which it is possible to buy fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers; and Piazza S. Maria Liberatrice, the social centre of the area with a theatre and public gardens.
